That’s how I ended up mixing up this passion fruit margarita, and let me tell you, this is not your average cocktail. The tartness of the fruit and its flavor. I was instantly obsessed.

When I was growing up in Trinidad, we had a passion fruit tree in our backyard. These days, they’re much harder to come by, and they cost a small fortune at the market. My husband bought a few recently, and here’s what I made with them.

What I love most is how easy it is to throw together. You don’t need any fancy bartender skills or weird ingredients. Just passion fruit pulp, fresh lime juice, a touch of agave, and good mezcal. That’s it, simple ingredients for a tropical drink.

Why You’ll Love This Drink

If you’re someone who loves a margarita that actually tastes like the tropics, this one’s going to win you over fast. Here’s why:

It’s not your basic lime-and-tequila combo.

The passion fruit adds this tangy, tropical twist that instantly brightens the whole drink. It’s sweet but not overbearing. You’ll also love how fresh this margarita tastes.

No store-bought mixes, artificial syrups, just fresh fruit, good mezcal, and a squeeze of lime. It’s easy to make; you literally shake, pour, and sip. And if you want to make it extra fun, rim your glass with salt.

Caribbean Passion Fruit Margarita (with Bitters)

Ingredients

  • 1.5 oz Jose Cuervo Silver (or Tradicional Plata)
  • 0.75 oz triple sec (or orange liqueur)
  • 0.75 oz fresh lime juice
  • 1 oz fresh passion fruit pulp or juice
  • 1 tbsp agave syrup or honey syrup
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • Ice cubes
  • Salt or Tajín for rimming
  • Optional garnish: lime wedge, mint sprig, or slice of starfruit

Instructions

  1. Rim the glass. Rub a lime wedge around the rim and dip it into salt. Fill with ice if serving on the rocks.
  2. Mix the cocktail
  3. In a shaker, combine:
    • Jose Cuervo
    • Triple sec
    • Lime juice
    • Passion fruit pulp
    • Agave syrup
    • Angostura bitters. (optional) Add ice and shake vigorously for 15–20 seconds.
  4. Strain and serve
  5. Pour into your prepared glass over fresh ice. Garnish with lime, mint, or tropical fruit.

Storage & Make-Ahead Tips

You can make the mix (without the sparkling part) up to 2 days ahead and keep it in the fridge. When you’re ready to serve, just pour it over ice and top with your soda or ginger beer.

If you’ve got extra passion fruit pulp, store it in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days, or freeze it in small portions for next time. I like to use an ice cube tray — one cube = one drink later.

But honestly, this is one of those drinks that’s best fresh. The fizz, the tang, that little pop from the seeds, it just hits better straight from the shaker.

Non-Alcoholic Version, Anyone?

If you’re skipping the alcohol but still want the margarita vibes, then try this mocktail. It’s bright, tangy, and you would not miss the alcohol at all. I make mine with fresh passion fruit pulp (seeds and all), a squeeze of lime juice, and a splash of orange juice for that citrusy punch.

Then I stir in a little honey syrup, and 1 drop of rum extract ( don’t sleep on it), and top it off with sparkling water or ginger ale for some fizz. You can also rim your glass with salt and add a few passion fruit seeds on top. The best part?

I recommend mixing everything (except the bubbly) ahead of time and keeping it in the fridge for up to two days. When you’re ready to serve, just pour it over ice.

Passion Fruit margaritas are not something you will find on a restaurant’s drinks list. No, you’ll have to make your version at home. I chose Jose Cuervo Silver because it is a popular tequila here in Trinidad and is very affordable. Most margaritas made on the island have this in them.

As a Trini, I add Angostura bitters to basically all my drinks and punch. Did you know that these bitters have alcohol in them? I recently read the label and saw this. Let’s just say, I was very surprised. I am also happy that I added a non alcoholic version for anyone who doesn’t want to drink the tequila.
