This has to be the ultimate bread companion, bringing together all the best flavors and concentrating them into a sandwich that is both satisfying and fulfilling. With just a handful of ingredients, this comforting food is the next best thing.

What Is Caribbean Cheese Paste?

Caribbean cheese paste is a creamy, seasoned spread made with grated cheese, butter, and mayonnaise.

To this flavorful paste, you can add grated carrots, onions, mustard, paprika, and herbs like parsley and celery for texture and taste. I also put a touch of black pepper or hot sauce for a mild spice.

If you do not like white bread, then whole wheat bread is an excellent alternative. For vegetarians, you can use veggie cheese.

Tips: Sometimes I add a tbs of mayonnise to my cheese paste because it makes my paste more creamy.

What to Eat Cheese Paste With?

Sandwiches: Spread it between slices of bread or rolls for a quick, tasty snack.

Crackers: Use it as a dip or topping for your favorite crackers.

Vegetables: Serve it as a spread with celery sticks, cucumber slices, or bell peppers.

Toast: Spread it on warm toast for a creamy, cheesy breakfast or snack.

Stuffed Vegetables: Use it to fill hollowed-out tomatoes, bell peppers, or celery sticks for a fun appetizer.

Finger Foods: Pair it with chips, breadsticks, or mini bagels for an easy party platter.

Cheese Paste Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 cups grated cheddar cheese (sharp or mild, based on preference)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (softened)
  • 3 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 1 teaspoon mustard (yellow or Dijon)
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika (optional, for smoky flavor)
  • 1 small onion (grated)
  • 1 small carrot (grated)
  • 1 tablespoon celery (finely chopped)
  • 1 tablespoon parsley (finely chopped)
  • Pepper Sauce (optional)
  • Optional: A few drops of food coloring (red, pink, or yellow for a fun twist)

Instructions

paste for bread

Start by grabbing a box grater and grating the cheddar cheese into fine pieces. The smaller the shreds, the easier everything blends later. (It also helps the texture stay smooth instead of chunky.)

Next,  mix the grated cheese, softened butter, mayonnaise, mustard, and a bit of black pepper in a big bowl. I make sure the butter’s nice and soft before starting because cold butter makes it clumpy. Then stir until it’s creamy and smooth.

After that, add the grated onion, carrot, celery, parsley, and paprika. These give it a nice crunch and color.

Always taste and tweak. Cheak to see if your cheese pasete need more pepper, mustard, or even a pinch of salt. You can also add a few drops of food coloring and mix until it looks even.

Once it’s seasoned, you can place it into an airtight container and chill it for at least 30 minutes. The rest time lets all the flavors mix.

When it’s set, serve it with bread, sada, or anything you like.

Storage

  • Refrigerator: Store cheese paste in an airtight container and refrigerate. It will last up to 5 days. Before serving, give it a quick stir to restore its creamy texture.
  • Freezing: Cheese paste doesn’t freeze well due to the mayonnaise and fresh vegetables, which can cause separation and changes in texture. It’s best to make it fresh or in small batches.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a different type of cheese?
Yes, you can substitute cheddar with other cheeses like gouda, Colby, or Monterey Jack. However, cheddar is the most common choice for its bold flavor and easy melting properties.

Can I skip the vegetables?
The grated carrot, celery, and parsley add texture, color, and freshness to the spread, but you can leave them out if you prefer a smoother consistency.

What food coloring should I use?
Liquid, gel, or powdered food coloring all work well. Yellow, pink, or red are popular choices, but you can experiment with other colors for a unique look.

Is this recipe spicy?
Not typically, but you can add a pinch of cayenne pepper or chopped Scotch bonnet for a spicier version.

Can I make this dairy-free?
While traditional cheese paste is dairy-based, you could try a dairy-free version using plant-based cheese, vegan mayonnaise, and vegan butter.

Can I use a blender or food processor?
Yes, blending the ingredients can create a smoother paste, but be careful not to over-blend, as the cheese may lose its structure.

What if the paste is too thick?
Add a little more mayonnaise or softened butter, one teaspoon at a time, until the desired consistency is reached.
